In almost all counseling sessions, I have asked couples to share and mention at least five factors that create a happy marriage and I have found their responses so fascinating in the sense that each of their opinions directly represents what would be on the flip side of the conversation the likes, dislikes, and aspirations of the relationship. Traditionally, couples are urged to compromise on certain things which if not compromised, ruin a happy marriage.
To find love and a happy marriage, your inner person must be ready to understand and accept the man or woman of your dreams. Aline your beliefs, worldview, ambitions, and aspirations in life to fit those of your partner. Couples with different ambitions in life have found it hard to make a marriage workout and eventually, their relationship steers towards separation or divorce. Seek counseling and guidance on how to make things work.
I asked three couples who have been together for over two decades of marital bliss and this is what they shared when I asked them what it takes to have a happy marriage.
Linda and Craige ” First of all, you pick your battles, we know where each other’s buttons are, we know how to push them, we know how to back off and just go into the other room. If we didn’t discuss the things that bother us, we wouldn’t make it to 45 years of marriage. We talk all the time and keep no secrets from each other”
Mr. and Mrs. Green ” In the early stages of our relationship, we had a big blow-up, and thereafter, we decided that we would set rules, rule number 1) We do not allow the volume to go past five, so we don’t go up to 6 or 7 2) We do not call eachother names, so she won’t talk about the size of my head”
3) ” We decided not to involve each other’s family in an argument. we find it cool to make up after any argument and it has worked for us. Because sex is a real deal in bringing back couples”.
Nathaniel and Paula “The key to a happy marriage is to have full disclosure, no secrets left in the past. let her know who you slept with in the past, more so if they are close friends and relatives”.
